President of the United States of America

"I am concerned about how these photos could have an impact on the safety of our troops. I was very clear to all those who consituent chain of command, or at least those of the Armed Forces United States, that the abuse of detainees is prohibited and would not be tolerated. "

The photos are from the U.S. prison at Abu Ghraib in 2004. Images of U.S. soldiers posing with detainees has resulted in a huge anti-American uprising in the world, particularly in Muslim countries.

President Obama said that the photos were used in some surveys. The Pentagon has conducted 200 investigations into alleged cases of abuse related to the photos in question.

The effort not to publish these photos is a volte-face of Obama over his repeated promises to open government. He promised to be available for further information, the courts have declared that they should be delivered to the public.

The White House insists that does not injure qu'Obama transparency, and specifies that the abuse shown are available on the website of the Pentagon.
